PS5 Pro: Release Date, Specs, Price, Features, and more

The PlayStation 5 is now four years old. The PS4 got its Pro version just three years after its initial release. So the PS5 is ripe for its upgrade. Although, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed the PS5 Pro, new reports are stoking the fire. Leaks have backed up the March report that a PlayStation 5 Pro is in the works.

The strategy seems clear. Sony wants to keep the hardware fresh. The PlayStation 5 Pro would cater to those who crave the latest tech and can afford it. But don’t get too excited yet because everything here is speculative. Treat it as a rumor for now. With that in mind, let’s dive into what we know about the PS5 Pro.

PS5 Pro Release Date

The PS5 Pro is expected to drop in 2024, although there has been no official word from Sony yet. But new leaks suggest the console could be released later this year. Developers have reportedly been briefed on the new console. These juicy details come from Tom Henderson. He nailed the prediction of PlayStation’s portable streaming device.

In May 2023, Henderson reported with “100% degree of certainty” that the PlayStation 5 Pro is in development. He expects it to be released in “Q4 2024”. This would be four years after the PS5’s initial launch. The PS4 Pro dropped three years after the PS4’s release. The Q4 2024 release window is seen as probable but Henderson has doubts.

As for the accreditation of first-party games, no one knows for sure how many will be able to leverage the upcoming console. Developers have until July 30, 2024, to submit applications for their games to support the PlayStation 5 Pro to Platform Certifications & Operations (CertOps).

Though Henderson’s latest report doesn’t fully support the 2024 release date, any applications released after September 15th “will be required to support the PlayStation 5 Pro.” This suggests the PS5 Pro could still be on track for its Q4 2024 release.

PS5 Pro Price Speculation

How much will the PS5 Pro cost? We expect it to be at least $100 more than the standard PS5 model, which means at least $600. However, there’s no concrete info on the price yet. This isn’t surprising, considering Sony hasn’t even confirmed the PlayStation 5 Pro’s existence.

So right now, it’s all guesswork. But the PlayStation 5 Pro could be significantly pricier than the current PS5 and PS5 Slim models. This would account for all the proposed hardware upgrades. The cost of the PS4 Pro at its initial launch in November 2016 was $399. That was the same price as the original PS4 at launch. Despite its better GPU and support for new “performance” modes, its price point remained the same.

PS5 Pro Specs Speculation

YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead dropped a video outlining the supposed specs for the PS5 Pro. His leaks are hit or miss, meaning there have been no concrete proof. However, the video was removed from YouTube after a copyright claim from Sony. But this act has only served to add more credibility to the video’s content.

Insider Gaming confirmed many of the leaked details, which might explain Sony’s copyright claim. They likely want to keep the finer details secret until an official announcement. From the now-deleted video, we know the PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to have 576 GB/s (18GT/s) system memory. That’s a 28% increase over the launch version of the PS5.

The CPU will reportedly be identical to the PS5’s. But the PlayStation 5 Pro will have a ‘High CPU Frequency Mode.’ This mode pushes the CPU 10% higher than the original PS5, up to 3.85GHz. Developers will be able to pick the mode during development and have access to 1.2GB more system memory. The launch PS5 and PS5 Slim currently have 12.5GB of system memory for developers. Sony has increased this to 13.7GB for the PS5 Pro.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is alleged to have a more powerful GPU with improved rendering. It’s slated to be 45% faster than its predecessor. The PS5 Pro is also said to deliver x2-4 faster ray-tracing performance. Now, as for the credibility of all these assumptions, The Verge stands behind them.

PS5 Pro Features Speculation

The PS5 Pro is expected to deliver more power in terms of graphics. But it won’t leave the older console behind. Sony isn’t likely to split the PlayStation user base. Every game will come to every version of the console.

The leaks from Henderson point to a general trend in the development of this console. Apparently, Sony is working on the power aspect of the device. The PlayStation 5 Pro will target improved and consistent FPS at 4K resolution. It will also feature a new ‘performance mode’ for 8K resolution and accelerated ray tracing. These rumors are supported by a tweet from user Onion00048. He spotted a new patent from PlayStation’s Mark Cerny in 2022. The deduction is that Cerny is investigating how to increase ray tracing performance on the PS5. This can’t be done via an update to the PS5 because it requires newer hardware. The PlayStation 5 Pro would focus on graphical fidelity, much like the PS4 Pro.

The now-deleted Moore’s Law Is Dead video also mentioned ‘PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution’ (PSSR). PSSR is Sony’s in-house upscaling tech, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. The canceled video included a document, which said that PSSR will use machine-learning techniques for better game resolution. It will support 4K initially, with 8K support coming in a future SDK version.

Sources told Tom Warren at The Verge that Sony is pushing developers to use ray-tracing tech. Games with significant enhancements will be able to use a “Trinity Enhanced” label.

Well, that is all we know currently about the PlayStation 5 Pro. If we were to summarize it, we’d say something like this. The potential release window is Q4 2024 and the price is expected to be at least $600. The CPU, GPU, and memory will see major upgrades. Graphical fidelity and performance are the major focus. But don’t hold your breath. At a glance, we can say that most of the information about this console is mere speculation. Sony hasn’t confirmed anything yet. But all this turns out to be true, the PS5 Pro could be the next big thing in gaming.
