McLaren W1 Announced, Successor to Hypercars P1 and F1
The McLaren W1 is the new hypercar and it was hinted in the latest teaser. With this new vehicle, McLaren has promised to take the legacy of the iconic P1 to even greater heights.
The McLaren P1 was the company’s ticket to stardom. It was this car that set them aside from the competition and marked them as superior automakers who knew how to deliver the best. Still, in the hypercar segment, to which the P1 belongs, no one can bank on a single release to hold them up for long. McLaren knows this too well.
Now McLaren’s latest and greatest hypercar, McLaren W1 is in the pipeline. They announced on YouTube that details and information would follow in less than two weeks. The video title is quite suggestive “What Makes a ‘1’ Car?” It’s a short one-minute clip that is more about drama than specifications, which is by intent. A couple of words and lines from McLaren’s chief executive, engineer, and so on, and lots of music and car footage. The only real piece of information we can glean here is that at 1 PM BST, October 6, a huge reveal will drop.
Yet this was expected. No one familiar with the McLaren way of doing things would be too surprised. The brand divides its fleet of cars into three tiers: the Sport Series, the Super Series, and the Ultimate Series. The first series started with the 570S. The Artura is the current symbol. The second series began with the MP4-12C and is now championed by the 750S. Finally, the third series began with the P1, and over time, more wild beasts joined the circus, like the Elva, Senna, and Speedtail.
However, none of these cars could be called a proper successor to the P1. Of course, we don’t want to discredit either the Senna or the Speedtail, the former being able to tear up asphalt while the latter reaches upwards of 250 mph, or any other Ultimate Mclaren, for that matter. However, the P1 had a surreal quality that defied and defined the limits of a hypercar.
But now, if we can glean anything from McLaren’s video, it is that the company is working on a vehicle that will take the revolutionary technology of the P1 and the F1 and push it to greater heights.
McLaren has decided to call its new supercar W1. According to the officials, this name comes from the “World Championship mindset.” McLaren W1 will be revealed on the 50th anniversary of the automaker’s first F1 championship.
McLaren’s CEO said, “The McLaren W1 is defined by real supercar principles and is the ultimate expression of a McLaren supercar.” Talking about the name, he continued, “Born of our rich racing history and World Championship mindset, W1 pushes the boundaries of performance and is worthy of the ‘1’ name.” Well, the W1 will speak for itself when it comes out, which is very soon.
