While the sedan or wagon might be the commonest sight on the streets, its versatility is dreadfully limited. The moment you take it off the street, it’s not going to hold up. That is the reason more people are turning towards trucks and SUVs as time passes. We thought this would be the perfect time to list the top 5 trucks and SUVs your money could buy in 2024.

Chevrolet Trax

Small vehicles are small, and sometimes too much. The Chevrolet Trax is on the move to upend this stereotype. This vehicle has stretched its total length by an additional 11.0 inches. We realize that that does not sound much, but when sitting inside a car, you’d be surprised how much legroom that gives you. The Trax is still the least costly Chevy in its lineup of subcompact-crossover territory. Its 106.3-inch is a perfect match for the class-larger Honda CR-V. In exact figures, this vehicle has 37% more cargo volume in the middle row compared to the previous model. In addition, there is a 3-inch increase in legroom. Even the hunkiest of males can slide right in and out within this space.

But there is also the criterion of fun: how much fun do you have while driving the Trax? Well, in terms of aesthetics and technology, we cannot rank this Chevy the highest. But for its price point, it offers a lot. Also, Chevrolet doesn’t make any promises that the car doesn’t fulfill. The basics of a driving experience, like the steering, braking, response, etc, are all solid here. In fact, they are well above average.

Ford Maverick

If we ask you to think of “pickup trucks,” we’d wager you are thinking of something heavy-duty. Well, it’s not your fault. The media surrounding the “truck” sector of the automobile industry has taught us the “The bigger, the better” formula. There are compact trucks, half-ton trucks, and also, one-ton trucks. Well, the Ford Maverick is here to break out the stereotypes and show us that the essential characteristics of a “truck” have nothing to do with its size.

The payload and towing capacity are two important points to consider in a truck. The Maverick scores high in both these categories but still retains a compact size ratio. That is a big part of the reason why it’s one of the best-selling models at Ford.

Genesis GV70

If a Genesis GV70 passed you on the road, and unless you were specifically on the lookout for one, you’d fail to notice it. From the outside, there is nothing specifically seminal about this car. However, inside, this is nothing less than a luxury compact SUV. That is because the guys over at Genesis have ticked off all the fundamentals of a luxury vehicle in this one.

The gas-powered Genesis GV70, and the Electrified GV70, are fitted with rich interior materials. The layout is kept simple and clean. The seats have been ergonomically designed and the HVAC system is driver-centric, keeping all the controls of the infotainment within easy reach. That was the interior. The exterior, as we mentioned, might not be what is found in typically luxurious SUVs, but it is stylish. The headlights are split and so are the taillights. Haunched fenders flank the bonnet and grille and fascias are adorned with mesh patterns of intricate details. Based solely on the exterior, it’d be hard to guess that the Genesis GV70 retails for only $46,095.

Honda CR-V

When the first model of the Honda CR-V launched in 1997, there were many educated guesses as to what the initials “CR-V” stood for. Well, most of them were wrong, because the full form was “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.” What has that got to do with the 2024 Honda CR-V? Not much.

This year’s CR-V is a continuation of the Civic and Accord in the compact SUVs arena. Honda has stopped manufacturing the Accord wagon and this car fills that gap and offers a lot more than what the previous one did. Fun fact: the CR-V’s powertrain closely resembles that of the Accord. The base motivator is a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four, tuned for 190 horses and paired with a CVT. The uplevel powertrain is a 204-hp hybrid setup. Both of these mechanisms are state-of-the-art technology. At full throttle, the interior’s sound level clocks in at 72 decibels. At 70 mph, it’s a comfortable 68 decibels. You can also opt for an all-wheel drive with either setup.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has tackled the number one problem of an EV to the ground: limited range. Here are the numbers. With the standard 58.0-kWh battery pack, the car delivers an EPA-estimated range of 220 miles. If you go for the 77.4-kWh pack, you’d get up to 303 miles of EPA-estimated range. Both of these ranges are on full charge.

The second problem in an EV is the charging speed. Well, the Ioniq 5 has a solution here too. It has an 800-volt electrical architecture that can pump the battery percentage from 10 to 90 in just 26 minutes when it is connected to a 350-kW fast-charger.

The third problem is the availability of fast charging stations. Well, that is not completely in Hyundai’s hands. But Tesla charging stations will become available to charge at from early 2025. That would ease this problem to some extent.

That concludes our list of the top 5 trucks and SUVs for 2024. By no means is this an exhaustive list nor it is meant to have a final say in your decision to buy a particular SUV or a truck. Consider this to be more of a signpost. But that said, you’d be hard-pressed to find better value-for-money cars than the ones we listed.
